Village Food Service
We specialize in cooking and baking culturally authentic meals
from nearly every culture in the world. With 14 language programs
representing an estimated 2.8 billion native language speakers,
this is not an easy task. As an example, at our Spanish
Language
Villages we serve Mexican empanadas, Bolivian
silpancho,
Argentinean asado, Spanish paella, and
pan dulce. Fortunately,
our year-round and summer staff bring a wide range of knowledge
and interest in learning the many foods associated with a particular
language.
Since the early 1980’s we have been tailoring our menus to help
support our language immersion programs. David Erceg realized
the importance food and eating together back then, and began
changing our menus from hot dogs and pizza to
Schweineschnitzel
and Kassler Rippchen. Today, our students (or villagers) share
their cultural experiences in the target language over an authentic
family-style meal.
During the summer, we serve an average of 6,000 villagers and over
1,000 staff at all of our summer language immersion camps. These
summer camps are located primarily in Minnesota, with a satellite
site located in Savannah, Ga. During the academic year, we offer
immersion programs for adults, families, and children at our main
site in Bemidji, Minn.
