Staff Positions
Each of the roles described below is an equally important component of the whole Village. A list of seasonal positions available and information on how to apply to work at the Villages is available in the "Work at the Villages" section of this Web site.
The dean’s role is to facilitate the formation of a staff unit. He/she carries the responsibility for day-to-day operation of the Village. For issues that go beyond the confines of the individual Village, the dean will serve as a liaison between the Village staff and the directors of Concordia Language Villages.
Counseling and teaching staff, from staff counselor to junior counselor, is directly responsible for carrying out the Village program. Counselors use Concordia Language Villages immersion techniques to teach language throughout the day. They lead and assist in the development of evening programs and cultural presentations, assume responsibility for cabin counseling and leadership, and motivate villagers to actively participate in the Village’s language and culture.
Credit teachers are part of the counseling staff, although their specific duty is to teach in the credit program. They are responsible for instruction during a four-week session that is the equivalent of one high school year of language instruction, with all levels of language proficiency available in each Village and class groups averaging six to 10 individuals. Credit teachers evaluate villagers’ progress, assume responsibility for cabin counseling duties and participate in the total Village program. The credit facilitator is responsible for running the credit program.
Program leader positions (art, music, dance, environmental awareness, sports, global perspectives, technology) and some support positions (waterfront, business manager) are usually combined with counseling responsibilities. Program leaders, who are experts in their area, identify appropriate projects, provide staff training and implement program activities. Waterfront staff and business managers perform duties appropriate to the position and participate in Village activities.
The business manager handles business operations for the Village. These responsibilities include Village stores, transportation of villagers, purchasing materials for the Village, bank and other financial operations, equipment maintenance, villager logistics and communications.
The Village healthcare provider is staffed by the Village healthcare team. In addition to providing personal healthcare needs, the healthcare provider collaborates with the dean and serves as a resource to staff members in the areas of health care, wellness and risk management.
The healthcare provider maintains scheduled office hours, has a daily routine that includes consultation with other healthcare providers, and is available for emergencies at any time. Unlike most Village staff, the healthcare provider does not necessarily speak the target language but is interested in learning it and often participates with Village language groups.
Food service: Kitchen staff members are an integral part of the villagers’ experience. The kitchen staff, consisting of a head cook, assistant cooks, kitchen helpers, and bakers, provides the Village with a vital part of the program: it is their responsibility to plan and prepare nutritional, appetizing and culturally authentic meals. They model practices and values of responsible world citizenship in addition to creating culturally authentic meals.
