François Fouquerel, leader of the French adult programs, notes that some participants are motivated to return to school to pursue a degree in language after being in the program.
Kari Berit, leader of the Norwegian adult and Elderhostel sessions has found that while participants often arrive with the idea that language learning is difficult for adults, they soon realize that the Language Villages sessions are highly active and full of fun. Adults appreciate the comforts of a retreat facility in the North Woods, along with the educational aspects.
Karla Wagner, a German- and Norwegian- language participant from Minneapolis, explains that the programs are particularly good for adults because "it puts you in a very relaxing setting, where you are away from your normal responsibilities and can focus on immersing yourself in language and culture."
The intentional mix of conversation time, language lessons, and activities provides many opportunities for using language. The adult programs are a unique opportunity for learners to come in contact with others who share a passion for learning language and about other cultures, drawing participants from all corners of the U.S. and Canada.
Karla adds "I've found that I enjoy coming back and visiting with a number of fascinating people whom I would never have met otherwise." Leaders and participants agree that the adult programs foster unique and lasting friendships, based on a shared interest in languages and cultures.
