COURSE DESCRIPTION
Join world language educators from across the United States and around the world in a 10-day course: Second Language and Immersion Methodologies (AMLA 600). During the course, participants will examine past and present methods of teaching a world language while drawing on their own experiences to enhance the discussions and understandings. They will learn about current theoretical bases for second language acquisition, instruction, and assessment, and how theory informs classroom practice. Models and principles for immersion instruction will be contrasted with second language instructional principles. Observation and analysis of a variety of methodologies in action at Concordia Language Villages is an integral part of this course. Specific course topics include:
- Current issues and topics in second language teaching and learning
- Characteristics of proficiency in a world language
- Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century
- Role of context in teaching for communication
- Integration of culture and language
- Application of Concordia Language Villages instructional strategies to the world language classroom
- Formative and summative assessments
Second Language and Immersion Methodologies (4 graduate credits) is the initial course in the Master of Education in World Language Instruction program.
The course is open to all K-12 second language educators, including ESL educators, college educators with an interest in K-12 second language methodologies, and pre-service education majors.
