Concordia Language Villages is pleased
to announce a major new initiative this summer: music camp.
Soiva Camp at Salolampi is a focused music-education program for piano and flute
hosted at the Finnish Language Village in northern
Minnesota.
In summer 2008, Concordia Language Villages will welcome its first group of villagers through customs and the process of selecting a new Portuguese name, marking the official opening of Mar e Floresta, the Portuguese Language Village.
The Luso-American Development Foundation awarded Concordia Language Villages a generous $300,000 grant to help with the costs to establish this Village. Mar e Floresta is the 15th Language Village and is located at a camp facility in northern Minnesota. Youth, aged 8 to 18, will be able to attend two-week immersion sessions starting in July 2008.
On Wednesday, October 24, 2007, the formal announcement of Mar e Floresta took place on Capitol Hill. Its opening was heralded by United States Senators Norm Coleman and Amy Klobuchar, House of Representatives Portuguese-American Caucus co-chair Patrick Kennedy, caucus members Representatives Devin Nunes and Jim Costa, Ambassador of Portugal João de Vallera, U.S. State Department Deputy Assistant Secretary for Academic Programs Thomas Farrell, Concordia College president Pamela Jolicoeur, members of the Village steering committee, and the Language Villages’ leadership team.
Live the languages and culture of Switzerland this summer during Helvetia Swiss Week, our new immersion adventure. Hands-on adventures are the keys to learning and Spass – fun! – during Swiss Week. Whether it is joining the Züricher Streetparade, Basler Fasnacht, Fêtes de Genève, or the Ticino Sagra dell'uva, climbing our own Matterhorn ropes course, trying your hand at boules, the Swiss folk art of Scherenschnitte, the crazy Swiss game of Hornussen, or playing the Swiss chocolate game, Helvetia is a whole new world in immersion learning.
Located at the Language Villages’ Turtle River Lake site near Bemidji, Minnesota, Helvetia Swiss Week offers a great experience in Switzerland’s three major languages – German, French, and Italian – together with exciting discoveries in Swiss culture and cuisine.
Concordia Language Villages now offers one-week Day Camps for 6-11 year olds. Learning a language is integrated with the fun of a summer day camp in a way that only the Language Villages can do. Children are immersed in a schedule full of activities – mask-making, painting, swimming, radio broadcasting, soccer, baking – while being surrounded by language and culture. Piloted in 2007, this program met with great enthusiasm from parents and participants alike.
Languages offering Day Camps in summer 2008: Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Norwegian, Spanish, and Swedish.
