Bridge the language and culture gap between you and your Spanish-speaking patients!
Spanish for Healthcare Professionals is designed to immerse participants in Spanish language and culture. Upon arrival, you will be assigned to a small group based on language ability. The active and interactive classes will typically begin with a brief grammar/vocabulary lesson followed immediately by in-class conversation with fictitious Spanish-speaking characters. You will practice your Spanish with the “patients” and learn to communicate with those who are receiving healthcare in a second language.
Each day, a session will be held on culturally significant issues that healthcare professionals need to understand in order to respectfully interact with Spanish-speaking clients and give the best possible care. The program concludes with individual one-on-one patient simulations. The instructors are primarily native speakers from Central and South America.
For beginning language learners, this course will allow healthcare professionals to communicate using Spanish in basic every-day situations. For intermediate and advanced speakers, the course will focus on enhancing vocabulary in more complex medical situations.
Spanish for Healthcare Professionals is held at El Lago del Bosque, the Spanish Language Village, in the peaceful North Woods of Minnesota. You’ll indulge in gourmet cuisine representative of many different Spanish-speaking cultures. Our comfortable and supportive setting will allow you to leave behind your day-to-day world and concentrate on learning in this intensive immersion environment.

- What are the top three things you have learned from this program that you will take back to your work
- Increased vocabulary related to healthcare, increased confidence to speak Spanish with patients, cultural awareness information.
- How to ask questions about patient’s symptoms/history, cultural understanding in regard to greetings/communication styles, medical terminology.
- What did you learn that was unexpected?
- The degree to which I could communicate with only a small set of phrases and terms.
- The cultural aspects of treating Latino patients. How, why, when they access medical care. How not to offend, but show respect/acceptance.
- How to tango – made it fun, and relaxing. Progress made from day two to day three.
- What else did you like about this program?
- I really appreciate the pocket book handout. I will bring it to work and use it. It’s a quick reference manual I can use in a pinch if I don’t have an interpreter.
- Loved the instructors! They were very knowledgeable, helpful and interacted in a non-threatening manner. It was OK if you didn’t get it the first time. Felt very comfortable to open up, have fun and learn at the same time. Great approach.
- Superb food! What a treat & pleasant surprise.
