FAQ
At Salolampi, Finnish language and culture come to life with authentic log cabins imported from Finland, authentic architecture and Northwoods setting. Villagers enjoy
heating up in the genuine steamy Finnish
sauna before a dip in the lake!
Activities
At Salolampi, you can play Finnish sports such as kyykkä (Karelian skittles), pesäpallo (Finnish style baseball) and jalkapallo
(soccer). Of course, you'll want to meet at the waterfront for swimming or canoeing. Villagers
also can be seen out hiking (sauvakävely)
in the afternoon through all the trails by the lake and through the
woods. Try your hand at tuohenpunonta (birchbark crafts) or kankaankudonta (loom weaving), or sing, act or dance at the ulkoilmalava (pavilion). Native and expert speakers will introduce you to modern Finland.
Sami Culture
At Salolampi, you'll learn about the indigenous Sami people
who inhabit the northernmost regions of Finland, Norway, Sweden and
Russia when your counselors tell stories in the saamelainen kota
(Sami hut). You'll learn about the modern and traditional Finnish
culture from your counselors, many who have lived in or are from
Finland.
Food
Try pannukakku (Finnish oven pancake) or Karjalan piirakat
(Karelian pastries). Typical Finnish meals are served family style around the table.
