Waldsee Family Weeks

 Two-Week Waldsee Program

College Credit for High School Students

Angela Merkel, Germany's first female chancellor, is an impressive woman. Chancellor Merkel is also the first person from the former East Germany to be elected chancellor and she is the youngest federal chancellor since the Federal Republic of Germany was created in 1949.

Imagine how much fun she would have if she visited Waldsee. Since she is a little too busy to make it this summer, let's show her how much fun she could be having. Using the picture above (click through the link to get the full resolution version), insert Angela into your favorite Waldsee photos. Top prize is a 20 Euro gift certificate to be used at the Waldsee Laden this summer! Runners-up will also receive prizes to be redeemed at Waldsee this summer. We'll announce the winners in next month's Waldsee Rundbrief.

Come experience Waldsee with the whole Familie! This summer, we have expanded our offerings for families to explore German, Swiss, and Austrian culture during our Family Week programs. The Family Weeks are open to participants from all ages — infants. and toddlers on up to parents and grandparents. One child and one adult participant is the minimum for each family. As a family, you can learn German, explore the German-speaking cultures of Europe, enjoy culturally authentic meals, and participate in all the fun and games that make the Waldsee experience so unique. Small group language instruction sessions are grouped by age and ability to ensure that both kids and adults feel comfortable with the teaching style during Family Week.  This summer we are offering three Family Week sessions:

Dates:
1. June 11-16, 2007
2. August 13-18, 2007
3. August 20-25, 2007

Costs:
Infants (to 1 years old) = free
2 to 3 years old           = $325
4-17 years old             = $435
Adults (all ages)          = $540

Ever since the first summer of Waldsee in 1961, the idea of combining the American camp experience with German language and culture has been the core element of our two-week program. Villagers in that program are able to explore the German language through intensive language instruction as well as culturally authentic activities, such as: Fußball (soccer), Malen (painting), Bogenschiessen (archery), Schach (chess), Schwimmen (swimming), Backen (Baking) and much more. Authentic meals from German-speaking Europe, a trip to the Waldsee Café, shopping at the Waldsee Laden or Café Einbeck, and plenty of time to hang out with friends rounds out a typical day at Waldsee. The culmination of each day is our evening program, where villagers might need to capture Wilhelm Tell, solve a mystery, or groove to the newest German music at the disco. Waldsee macht Spaß!

Germany is Europe's largest economy and a political heavyweight in European affairs. Germany was one of the six original members of the European Union and remains its strongest champion for an ever greater union. This year, Germany holds both the EU and G-8 presidencies. This summer, Chancellor Angela Merkel will host the G-8 summit in the sleepy seaside town of Heiligendamm on the Baltic Sea.

Waldsee's College Credit program will be closely following Germany's European policy and explore both the history and current trends of Germany's position in the middle of Europe. Similar to Waldsee's High School Credit program, the College Credit program allows students with a minimum of three years of German and who have not yet started university to earn a semester's credit from Concordia College. This credit can be transferred to the university or college of your choice in the future.

Waldsee Four-Week Middle School Program

Donating to Waldsee

For the first time in its 47-year history, Concordia Language Villages is offering a day camp program at our site on Turtle River Lake just outside Bemidji, Minn. Children ages 6-11 will explore German language through nature, music, sports, games, dance, arts, crafts and delicious food in this unique immersion program. The Waldsee Adventure Day Camp program exposes children to authentic, contextualized and active language instruction. The program provides a great foundation for future language study, whether in school or at Concordia Language Villages.

Waldsee Adventure Day Camps are week-long programs, running Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. between July 16 and August 24. An extended day option is available. The program will be held at Waldsee German Language Village, an architecturally authentic site, home to North America’s premier program in language and cultural immersion for young people.

Waldsee has had a long tradition of preparing young Americans for their first trip abroad - with family, with friends, or as an exchange student. However, high school students can also go abroad with Waldsee and earn a year's worth of high school credit in the process. The German Credit Abroad program uses many of the same time-honored teaching methods developed by Waldsee to make learning German fun, while also providing a solid foundation for future study. This year's trip runs from June 27th through July 25th and is led by Susanne Ilse Barrett, a long-time Waldsee staff member and German teacher from Colorado. The trip will begin in Switzerland, exploring the natural beauty of the Swiss Alps and sampling local cuisine. Next on the agenda is a trip to Waldsee's sister city, Bad Waldsee in Southern Germany. Here, students will stay with host families and explore the surrounding area through a variety of excursions. From here, the group will continue traveling around Germany, stopping in Berlin, Dresden, and Frankfurt. A year of credit may be awarded by participants' schools after successful completion of the course.

If two weeks at Waldsee just aren't enough, how about four? This summer, we're offering an extended option for middle school-aged students. This is an excellent way to prepare for stepping up to high school credit in the future or just getting a double dose of Waldsee fun and games - twice the activities, twice the evening programs, twice the German, twice the fun! Participants can chose between our core curriculum or from a variety of adventure programs - der Märchenwald, die Grüne Welle, Radio Waldsee, das Stadttheater, Helvetia, or Kollegstufe. No matter which of these optional programs you choose, you're sure to keep busy.

Imagine learning German on a pontoon boat. What better way to have a great time at camp, enjoying our wonderful surroundings on Turtle River Lake, than motoring around on a pontoon boat and speaking German the whole time? Unfortunately, we don't have one. Thus, we are sending out an appeal to see if there is anyone out there who either has one or knows of someone who has one and would be willing to either loan or donate it to us for part or all of the summer. Alternatively, we would like to launch a campaign to purchase a basic model for our site. If you would like to contribute to this campaign, please contact our main office and ask to speak to someone about contributing to the Waldsee Village Vision fund. We are also hoping to raise money for a Pit-Pat table-top mini-golf course, park benches, a gazebo, and scholarships. If you have an older PC or laptop that is still capable of running Windows XP or Mac OS X and would like to find a new home for it, please let us know. We are trying to increase the availability of computers at the Village and any donation of this sort would be greatly appreciated.
