Deutschlernen in Waldsee!
Übercool, Mann!!

WALDSEE'S FOUR-WEEK
MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAM

CASTLES ON THE RHINE

WEEKEND OF FAIRY TALES

Waldsee Fotowettbewerb

"Deutsch ist cool! There's still so much to do  can I stay longer - darf ich noch bleiben!?" Two weeks at Waldsee just fly by we've had so many requests for a four-week immersion program, last summer we began with great success our four-week immersion language program for kids in grades 6-8.

The same fun and excitement of Waldsee's core program await, but with more depth of experience and important preparation for high school. Kids hone their language skills, deepen their friendships with pals from across the country and around the world, and simply enjoy the Spass und Abenteuer of life at Waldsee.

Parents can get more bang for their transportation buck
– one trip to Waldsee, but twice the benefit. What's not to like? Waldsee also offers four-week high school credit programs in Minnesota and abroad and college credit sessions for high school students in Minnesota.

In medieval times, the land of the Germans was divided into small principalities, and each prince needed a fortress worthy of demonstrating power and might. Around the 11th century, castles popped up like crazy along the beautiful Rhine river. Merchants traveling the river had to stop in front of each one and pay the owner a toll to continue on. After centuries of battles and decay, many of these mighty edifices along the Rhine have been restored as restaurants, hotels, museums or even private residences. Interested in overnighting at the castle of Bacharach? Join us on our high school German Credit Abroad Program June 25-July 23, 2008, for this and many other cool adventures in Germany.

Want to learn more about castles? Explore the Web site of the Europäisches Burgeninstitut to view detailed information, photos and locations of more than 600 catalogued castles and fortresses in Germany alone.

German students have the opportunity to attend German Village Weekends with their teachers several times throughout the school year.

This year’s Waldsee Village Weekends theme is Eine Reise in die Märchenwelt (A Journey into the World of Fairytales). Several of the activities, simulations and songs reflect the stories of the Brothers Grimm and others who have enriched German literature with their tales of Märchen magic.

Meals are typical of those enjoyed by youth in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and participants can sample a wide variety of cultural activities and dance to the same music enjoyed by their peers in those countries. Students are surrounded by the German language as they spend the weekend in the company of their Betreuer (counselors) – most of them students from Concordia and other regional colleges and universities. Teachers’ evaluations often praise these young leaders for their enthusiasm and patience as they help participants improve their command of German.

You still have time to enter your best photos from Waldsee in our Fotowettbewerb (photo contest).

You can enter three photos, one in each of these three categories: 1) Waldsee ist cool! (Waldsee is cool), 2) Waldsee ist schön (Waldsee is beautiful), and 3) Waldsee Freundschaften (Waldsee Friendships).  E-mail your photos to waldseecontest@gmail.com.

Be sure to include both your Village and legal names, your session when you were at Waldsee, the year that your photo was taken, and a valid email address so that we can contact our winning villager photographers.

The winners will receive prizes from the Waldsee Laden and will be announced in our January Rundbrief. The deadline for submission is December 31, 2007.

WIE SAGT MAN SCHNEE

WEIHNACHTEN

WALDSEE DuTube

Waldsee is active all through the year, and winter activities add some fun twists to the Waldsee experience. Families come to Waldsee each February to enjoy winter German language adventures. Have you played volleyball in the snow? Or how about Schneefußball? Did you know that the Germans have almost as many words for snow as the Eskimos?

Eisballonen machen, Schneeschuhlaufen, die Sauna geniessen – auch im Winter macht Deutsch Spass!

For more information on the Waldsee Family Fun Weekend, click here.

Here is a list of the various words for talking about snow in German.

Neuschnee ist frisch gefallener Schnee, der nicht älter als drei Tage ist. Die Eiskristalle sind noch fein verzweigt mit spitzen Zacken.

Altschnee
liegt bereits mindestens drei Tage.

Harsch

Pulverschnee

Flugschnee

Feel like adding a bit of German culture to your holiday celebrations? The German Embassy in the United States has put together a great list of German Christmas cookie recipes for you to try out at home. There are all sorts of cookies ready to be made - including: Mandelmakronen, Haselnussplätzchen, and Zimtsterne.  See below for the link.

Or, would you like to sing a German Weihnachtslied with your class or with your family this holiday season? Here's a traditional German Christmas carol that is also popular in English -- O Tannenbaum!

O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum,
Wie grün sind deine Blätter!
Du grünst nicht nur zur Sommerzeit,
Nein auch im Winter, wenn es schneit.
O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum,
Wie grün sind deine Blätter!

O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum,
Du kannst mir sehr gefallen!
Wie oft hat schon zur Winterszeit
Ein Baum von dir mich hoch erfreut!
O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum,
Du kannst mir sehr gefallen!

O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum,
Dein Kleid will mich was lehren:
Die Hoffnung und Beständigkeit
Gibt Mut und Kraft zu jeder Zeit!
O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum,
Dein Kleid will mich was lehren!
