WALDSEE'S Adult Week and Family Fun Weekend

Goethe-Institut Teacher Seminar at the
Waldsee Biohaus

WEEKEND OF FAIRY TALES

Waldsee Internet Schnitzeljagd

Adults get together at Waldsee twice a year to share their interest in German language and culture. The program gathers participants from a wide range of language abilities–from absolute beginners to fluent German speakers.  Language instruction at the various levels is complemented by cultural presentations, traditional and modern cuisine of German-speaking countries, German songs, and a variety of activities including games, crafts and informal conversation. Participants share the experiences they have had in Europe and among German-Americans, and they enjoy making and renewing friendships.

This spring’s German Adult Week, Deutschland, Österreich und die Schweiz in Minnesota, is scheduled for April 20 – 26 at Waldsee
For further information, please contact Larry Heinrich Saukko at saukko@cord.edu.

There's also still time to sign up for Waldsee's Family Fun Weekend  February 15-18.

Chicago's Goethe-Institut and Waldsee are teaming up for an exciting weekend seminar, "Bringing Nature and the Environment into the German Classroom," this May. Teachers of German from across the Midwest will gather first-hand experience of applying Waldsee's content-based immersion approach to issues of environmental studies and sustainable living.

Participants will have the chance to live in Waldsee's award-winning, super energy-efficient Waldsee BioHaus and work with Edwin and Laura Dehler-Seter, authors of Natur! Bringing Nature and the Environment into German Language Classrooms, Waldsee's newest book on adapting our teaching techniques to the classroom setting.

When: May 9 – May 11, 2008

Location
: Waldsee in Bemidji, Minn.

For further information, please contact the Goethe-Institut in Chicago or Edwin Dehler-Seter, the environmental education specialist at Concordia Language Villages.

Middle and high school students have been using and improving their German as they accompany their German teachers for "Eine Reise in die Märchenwelt"–the theme for this year’s German Village Weekends at Waldsee. The rich fairy-tale heritage of the German-speaking countries provides a basis for many of the activities offered during the Weekend. Villagers have a chance to learn the vocabulary of the old tales–some that are familiar and others that are less well-known–as they join their Familien in creating three-dimensional depictions of the stories, make up their own fairy tales, participate in simulations based on the legends, and sing songs reflecting the magic of this abundant folk culture.

There are ample participant spaces remaining for the weekends of February 8-10, March 7-9, May 1-4 and May 9-11. Teachers are also reminded about Sprachfest–the Minnesota AATG’s German competition for middle and high school students co-hosted by Waldsee and the Concordia College German Department April 5-6. For information, please contact Waldsee’s Larry "Heinrich" Saukko at saukko@cord.edu.

We are pleased to announce the second annual Waldsee Internet Schnitzeljagd. Last year we had over 500 students participate in the scavenger hunt and one of them won a two-week scholarship to Waldsee!

Teachers are encouraged to pass along information to their students or even assign it as a class project. Individuals are also welcome and encouraged to participate.
